Scrubs
Throughout this two minute scrubs sequence various camera techniques were used to film this particular scene, these techniques included: Different camera shots, use of non diegetic and diegetic sound, editing and transitions and various camera movements used to have an effect on the audience.
At the beginning of any sequence the first shot is usually (but not always) an establishing shot. An establishing shot is a great way to introduce the film sequence as it gives an insight to the audience for example, where the location is, what job they have? Etc. However in this first shot we see a medium shot that lasts about one second. We see the main character standing behind a door as if he’s hiding from someone. Instantly the audience can tell what his occupation is just because this shot in the corridor of a hospital.
The shot then cuts to an over shoulder shot of the main character talking to some very strange looking men in an elevator. The shot then changes to another over shoulder shot, but of the men’s point of view, giving the audience a chance to see the main character up close. These two shots continue to change as a shot reverse shot. This happens about eight to nine times. The men then start to sing; this is all diegetic sound.
The camera then tilts to a man about to step into the elevator. The shot quickly cuts again to three main characters sat on a chair each. This was done purposely as people will find it rather funny as all three different workers are complaining about their job, but also the colour scheme will have an impact on this shot as three different colours are used. The man on the left is in Green. The woman in the middle is wearing purple and finally the man (main character) on the right is seen wearing dark blue. Even though many people don’t pay as much attention to the little details like this it is surprising how much of an effect it does have on the audience.
The cut ends and a ‘wipe out’ transition is used to start of the next shot. At this point the camera movement is moving slightly lasting a matter of seconds. Throughout the whole of this small scene non diegetic music is used to build up excitement and for dramatic effect.
Next shot is a medium close up of the doctor talking to another doctor, there are once again various shot reverse shots being used, as well as over shoulder shots. This is used to let the audience feel involved in this scene and to see the situation in each of the characters perspectives.
The camera moves again and pans round to a medium close up of the nurse talking to another doctor. There is a pattern progressing as the use of shot reverse shots and over shoulder shots are being used so frequently, however they are working effectively as they do not bore the audience because the shots aren’t lasting that long.
The next and final shot is of the main character ( in blue) walking fiercely down the corridor. This shot is a tracking shot, the camera is looking slightly up towards him making the main character look fierce unstoppable and brave. This gradually builds up tension especially a slow motion is used and the non diegetic sound is playing.
The shots keep constantly cutting to the men singing round the desk, this is used again, to create tension. Finally the main character opens the curtain and the music stops this effect is called juxtaposition. The music completely stops in order to bring the character and audience back to reality and normality.
